Tony Walker in his oils, watercolours and acrylics seeks the inner character or underlying truth within the subject that has drawn his attention and his aim is to connect with its timeless qualities.
The artist's inspiration comes directly from the figurative subject or the site - 'to interpret a landscape I begin within it - understanding assimilating and abstracting the elements - the space, the forms, colours, textures, sounds, the scents.' His site paintings and sketches are the material for development of interpretive studio work.
In seeking to capture the spirit of the subject, his paintings generally contain a subtle element of surrealism as alluded to by Dr Patricia Groves regarding 'from the studio' exhibition in Muscat, 2006:
